It is always interesting to have students learn about the authors behind the books they are reading. This lesson plan is designed for older students (grades 5-8). It has them exploring Maurice Sendak’s life and introduces the controversary of the Where the Wild Things Are illustrations. Many librarians felt that the pictures were too scary for young children. The prompt at the end of the worksheet suggests that the students draw a page for a new version of the book in which the monsters are tame looking. That could make for some very interesting results! Sounds fun!
