October 1, 2013 by Vikram Goyal

knitting-newbie-tip

We asked this question on the Facebook page of our sister site Craftbits.com, and got several great answers.

Add your own tip for newbies to Knitting in the comments. And the top tip for a knitting newbie is? Read on till the end to find out!

So here goes:

Don’t be afraid to learn new knits to mix up your projects.

Have nice needles.

Don’t be afraid to pull it out and start again, one of the best ways to learn

Don’t stab your teacher with your knitting needle if you get frustrated. Also, be patient.

Save all wool – as scraps make a gorgeous scarf

Also- start with basic stitches – so you can achieve something- feels GREAT when you do

If at first u don’t succeed don’t give up! Try again

Mistakes are your friend – Start first project as a ‘have a go’ scarf – encourage errors and learn from them – “look at my hilarious thing that taught me so much” lets you depart from stress and learn to play.

I cursed a lot…but I didn’t have anyone to really help me so YouTube became my go to for help….

Develop a rhythm and keep your tension even. Continental style works best, as well as allowing you to knit fast like wind. Start slow and steady and voila.

Practice a ton to get your cadence down… It’s what makes the difference between a beautiful piece and an ‘eh’ piece:)

Hide your yarn from the cats.

crochet lol

Make gauge swatches!!!

Get The Knifty Knitter rings, it is easy and fun,

Count your stitches at the end of each and every row.

Put your wool in a fridge when not in use. I worked in a wool shop as a teenager and this is what the owner told me. Xx

Crochet instead lol!

practice, practice, practice!!

Stay calm, the more u panic the more ur hands get sweaty x

Don’t give up

Take it slowly, don’t be too adventurous, start with a garter stitch scarf.

So, the one top tip for a knitting newbie is – if you read the whole thing: Patience! Have a lot of patience and practice a lot.

Knitting is an amazing hobby to have, especially for those who are looking for a creative outlet. Not only is it a great way to express yourself, but it can also be a great way to relax and destress. Knitting can bring a sense of accomplishment, as well as a sense of comfort and satisfaction.

If you’re a beginner knitter, there are some essential tips you should keep in mind. First, start with a smaller project. This will help you to gain confidence and get the hang of the basics. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can move onto bigger, more complex projects.

Another tip for beginner knitters is to use the correct tools. Make sure you have the right type of needles and the correct type of yarn for your project. The wrong tools can make the job much harder and more frustrating.

Another great tip for beginner knitters is to find a pattern that is easy to follow. A good pattern will have written instructions as well as diagrams or photos that can help you to understand the pattern better. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’re getting stuck.

Finally, be patient with yourself. Knitting can be difficult and frustrating, but with patience and practice, you can become an expert knitter. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and learn from them. With time and dedication, you can become a master knitter.

Knitting is a great hobby to have and with the right tools, tips, and patience, you can become an expert. From making cozy blankets and scarves to customizing your own sweaters and hats, there’s no limit to what you can create with knitting. So grab your needles and yarn, and get started!

Personally, I think a scarf is too big for a first project. Dishcloths or washcloths are terrific, as they’re basically just bigger swatches! Make enough of them and you can whipstitch them together for a lapghan, or gift them (3 or 4 together).
