“Save The Date” – Are they actually necessary?

Wikipedia says : A save the date is a notice stating the date of a significant event such as a wedding. It is typically sent to those likely to be interested or affected by the event and states the planned date of the occasion so that recipients who wish to attend know to keep that date free.

OK so why not just send out the invitations? Have we really become so busy that now we need to get an invitation to “save the date” because another “actual” invitation is pending?

So is it really necessary? What are your thoughts? Did you send only invitations or did you do the whole “Save the date” thing too? And I am not just talking about weddings.
