We were invited by Brother Australia to test drive their new sewing machine range “Simplicity”.
Brother International Australia, is a leading manufacturer in home sewing machines and has partnered with industry icon Simplicity® Patterns to launch three new sewing machines; Simplicity® by Brother.
This new line-up includes three models: SL100, SL300 and SL500. Each machine has a variety of features that caters to different sewing levels.
The SL100; first threads to stitches, is perfect for beginners and includes 17 built-in stitches plus a Simplicity® pattern from the Learn to Sew range. The hardworking SL300; the experience of something intricate, is the next sewing step and features 27 built-in stitches and a Simplicity® pattern from the Easy to Sew range. The SL500; the beauty of something masterful, is the top of the range, a computerised sewing machine including 40 built-in stitches plus a Simplicity® pattern from the Amazing Fit range.
We asked Rita to review the sewing machine for us, this is what she had to say:
Well I finally got down to trying my new machine out. I had to put all my Christmas things back into storage first.
What a nice surprise after having only one main machine for over 30 years with no problem until about 12 months ago when little things started to go wrong all the time. I finally said enough is enough. I was convinced that I would never get used to another and I have looked at quite a few and none have compared to this one on price and simplicity.
I found it very easy to operate and being of pension age I don’t absorb instruction or direction very easily.
Within one hour I was over my old machine and in love with this one!
There are more than enough variations of stitches for your average sewer because it is easy to use.
I would not hesitate getting one for my grandchild. She may not use all the stitches at this stage but because its so easy to use why would you not give her the best to start with?
There is nothing more frustrating then when you are getting started and wanting to experiment but your machine won’t let you. I had my last machine over 10 years before I started using it to it’s full potential but the options were there. I grew into my machine.
So far I haven’t conquered the serger/cutter over locker foot. I find I have trouble threading the needle on the cutter foot but as i can’t thread my own overlocker at all now as my hands can’t get into tiny gaps and my eyes can’t see the tiny holes. It’s no fun having to wait until your husband gets home to thread your machine back up for you. Especially when you are in the middle of making 23 mermaid costumes for my granddaughters party that can only be done on an overlocker.
To sum up it’s easy to use, has a good price and doesn’t weigh a tonne. It’s very quiet when running and the overlocker foot will eliminate the need for a second overlocker/serger machine.
The new Simplicity® by Brother machines are exclusively sold in Spotlight stores across Australia. To find out more of the great features that this range has to offer visit www.brother.com.au/simplicitybybrother or visit your closest Spotlight store.

When our sons were babies I hand made the bulk of their clothes. Going into children wear shops and sketching out a picture of something I liked and then reproducing it for them to wear. My mother was an excellent sewer making close for all 5 children. I stopped sewing when I went back to work and had more money to buy clothes. Now we have two beautiful grandchildren and nothing gives me more joy than making them something special and unique, a new sewing machine would complete my happiness.
Jenni-Mae Clissold says
I would love to win a new sewing machine for my 13 year old daughter. Over the Christmas holidays she has worked patiently on my old sewing machine making patchwork curtains for her room. She is so enthused to do other projects but the old machine often makes it difficult for her. A new machine would really help to keep her enthusiasm up and the crafting projects coming.
gail kutasi says
I struggle to lift my old Brother sewing machine to the table, my Husband does this for me, even though I love it. It doesn’t like reverse any more and breaks needles like no other machine. Leacena Walker says

Today my daughter was to start prep, but instead today I visited her at the cemetery. As a teacher, I would have had such joy watching her begin her own learning journey. Today I want to open her blanket box and plan a quilt from some of her favourite clothes, to remember, to cherish, to heal my shattered heart. It will never grace a bed, but will be not only a ‘busy’ task to help me, but a beautiful memory. A brother sewing machine with easy to use functions and renowned Brother reliability could help me achieve my goals.

I bought my Brothers sewing machine about 15 years ago. It was even then the most basic, affordable model. Although it is not the fanciest of all, I have sewn many things with it over the years. These days I need to keep tightening bits of the machine during my sewing sessions or bits and pieces start to fall off (aggggrr!). It must be about time to start looking for a new one…

Melida Heine says
I already have a Brother Star 110 machine and have loved it dearly for many years now. Recently I have discovered quilting and have set myself a goal to make one for each of my four children. And one for myself hopefully. A new sewing machine would be like the icing on the cake to me. My old machine is only small and I feel a new improved model would help me create some beautiful heirlooms for my children, oh just thinking of the things I could do! As three of my children are girls I would like to pass on my much loved and well used machine to my oldest 16 year old daughter, who I know will find as much pleasure in it as I have.

I would be so happy if I win the Brother S1500 as my old Janome is too heavy to lift, too hard to thread and as I have never been able to afford an over locker I’d get that function as well. Retired and despairing as the dollar heads south with our savings, please choose me.

Caroline Neary says
After not sewing for many years, now retired, I decided to get back into sewing. In the past I only ever made garments that required very basic sewing skills and therefore with my new machine I purchsed a very basic model. The machine is very good but leaves me frustrated as I am very limited with what I can achieve. I now have the time and inclination to experiment and create more fancy detailed work that can’t be achieved on my current machine. I also have to pop around to my daughters to use her overlocker.
To own a computerised Brother machine would be an absolute dream. To me it would be like having an opportunity to own a Rolls Royce when all you have is a Mini.
They say DREAMS DO COME TRUE.
Jenni says
Thanks for the opportunity to enter this competition. I would love this new machine as I could embellish my wearable art and clothes. I bought some silk from vietnam and am not game to use my old 30 yr old machine as the tension always plays up so lots of redoing and hand sewing gets done instead. It would be good to not have to use an over locker as a separate machine. I also have an industrial machine as my old machine can’t sew any denim thickness. I sew for myself my husband, adult sons and my grandchildren, so a new machine will allow me to be even more creative.
Michelle Brown says
I would love to win of these as I have only ever had 1 $99 sewing machine which lasted a year…I have had major health issues which has seen me off work and not able to contribute to the household much any more…nothing would make my heart sing with joy & happiness agsin than being able to get all those projects I have piled up in my craft room ready to go for when I can finally get a good machine ????????
LILLIAN says
It is like you read my mind! I have been wanting so badly to learn how to sew, but would not spend the money on a machine. I have an extremely limited income so I do not want to waste and maybe with this giveaway, I won’t have to and I could maybe earn some extra money! Thank you Singer and CG!!!

Helen Aurisch says
I have recently begun sewing for a charity called “Days for Girls”. We make kits for girls to use each month as they have nothing else to use and become outcasts each month AND lose so much time away from school! I thought that this was a very worthwhile charity to support.
My brother is over 40 years old and I just cross my fingers when I get it out to use! So Far So Good…. My beautiful daughter has lent me her over locker so I can help with more things that need volunteers to get these bags done! This is why I would love to win a Brother machine before my old machine dies on me….
Doris Aisake says

My wife has always sewn all kinds of things by hand. Perhaps you can help change this for her?
Tim says
We would love this so we can finally try out some of your sewing projects. (We’ve used some of your other craft ideas, but have always shied away from ones requiring sewing.) And also so I can get around to fixing all my daughters ripped and torn clothing!
Christine says
To win this machine would be an absolute joy! I remember the excitement I had as a child when my mum would make pretty dresses from scratch for my sister and I. There was something magical about being able to go shopping with mum to find the perfect material and watching mum get out the pattern, chalk and scissors, then eagerly waiting as each piece is sewn together and finally being able to wear the finished product out and show it off to all my friends. There was always a proud “Mum made it” moment!
I’m ‘Mummy’ to a beautiful 3 year old now and would love to give her the same experience I had and provide her the same warm childhood memories to grow up with by taking her material shopping and watching mummy sew together her outfits piece by piece!
Amanda says
I would love to own this machine as it would help to bring my mother and I together as she would be able to teach me how to sew and create marvellous creations like she used to when I was young. Then when I have children and they grew up we can sit around the brother sewing machine and do the same… Brother sewing machines making memories for life.
Phillip Wu says
I’ve not had much experience with a sewing machine until I started making shoes. Trying to sew the leather uppers was real difficult to master as it seam has to be just 1-2mm from the edge and there are varying material thickness.
Now that I have got some experience with making shoes I’d like to make my own clothes and this needs a good easy to use sewing machine.
Brother brand has a good reputation for long lasting performance
Phyllis says
I’m a cosplayer. Basically I go around dressed up as imaginary characters from famous animes/games/cartoons/tv shows. I also sew my costumes myself. By hand. So why do I want the SL500 Brother sewing machine you ask? So I can continue my cosplay hobby with even bigger and elaborate costumes using this machine, and tell people I sewed this outfit myself using a Brother sewing machine, and you can too! 🙂
Meg Lea says
I’m only just starting out learning to sew, my friend is teaching me. I am a new first home owner and I can’t afford to buy mu own machine, so winning a new Brother sewing machine would be amazing!
Huy says
Would love to hem my own pants
Russell says
I would Love to win this for my mum. She made all my clothes when I was little and always made sure we never went without anything even though money was tight. She is planning to renew her wedding vows late this year and this will definitely assist her as she was hoping to make her own wedding dress.
Matthew Beardsley says
My girlfriend has a new hobby…the first thing she made me was a wallet and her a dress…not so crash hot, but she’s persistent and has gone back to sewing school (who knew that existed!) I’d like to reward her perseverance with this because it looks great!
Helen W says
I still have such fond memories of school holidays arts and craft sessions with my mum, where we’d spend hours looking at different fabrics and arranging them into the perfect quilt. Even now, the smell of ironing fabric takes me back to those days. I’d love to continue that tradition with my daughter and get her interested in sewing. It’s such a glorious, underused hobby!
Sam says
I want this machine to help kickstart my desire to learn more about the hands on side of textiles, fashion and clothing. I want to learn how to make my own garments. From my research it sounds like Brother makes the best gear for what I want to do, so this is an amazing opportunity. Would absolutely love to win this! Cheers!
Katrina says
I have always wanted a sewing machine to hem up clothes or create my own pieces however I am constantly saving up for things that need to be saved up the most so I have never really had the chance to buy or own one. This sewing machine would be an excellent addition to the household, build up my skills for future use and best of all save me time from sewing by hand!
Alan says
I want to replace my mother’s old sewing machine she’s had ever since I was born in the late 1980’s. I feel she’s always wanted a new machine but could never justify purchasing one while she was raising two children.
Richard says
I have a brother printer and It is fast, economical and easy to use. So I want another Brother product and I love sewing and stitching. So why not I thought, it will be great to have the SL500 and I am thinking of all the wonderful sewing that I can do with it. And yes I am a male who love sewing and I am not giving it to anybody else, I am going to keep and use it make great art. My Brother and I we will make a great team.

The machine the in laws gave me to patch the holes in my works pants has gone bust so this would be perfect to save me a few dollars in 2015!
Veronica says
I struggle with my sewing machine that is over 30 years old, the tension is too tense, stiches all over the place, parts breaking down and sewing projects just keep getting put on the back burner. I really need to replace this only Singer, as it ain’t singing no more, but I’m screaming instead and becoming way too tense.
Irene says
I love to sew and tell my friends I’m wearing a “one-off” designer dress”. They look at me “what did it cost?” Less than you think I could proudly smile SI500 Brother makes it easy to look in style.
carolineroeger says
I have a love a fashion. It is my happy place. I would love to start designing and making my own clothes, so this machine would help me with my passion!
Edward Dekkers says
My wife is an avid sewer and does it more for relaxation and creativity. About 8 months ago, while using her old Bernette she’s had since her high school days it happened. A lovely electrical burning smell and it was all she wrote. For a few months she looked on web site for a good new one to replace it but after a few ones on special she unfortunately missed out on, she lost all confidence in replacing it in our budget, as money is not exactly growing on trees in this house hold. Whatever we save go on “more important” things in her eyes.
I would of course LOVE to win this competition, not tell her, and simply present a new sewing machine out of thin air. Would love to see her spend the 1-2 hours every couple of nights enjoying her time behind the machine again.
So here’s to crossing my fingers. There are plenty of other comments here which look very worthy of winning, and good luck to everybody for sure, but here’s my hat in the ring to see if I can make my lovely wife happy.
With Valentine’s day coming up it would sure beat the hell out of a box of chocolates or flowers 🙂

Loved your review
My wife is a new first time mother and currently she does all her craft work by hand
I believe it would be a dream of she could get to use the SL500
Keep up the good work ; D

This smancy Brother SL500 is the perfect excuse to replace my mother’s insanely old 591 machine that she so desperately needs. If there is one thing that a home seamstress needs, it is definitely one that has all the features of an old-school hardy workhorse with the looks of a modern day, drama-free beauty. Yes, I did some research into this machine while looking to buy a new one for my mother when hers eventually hit the dust. This machine has an auto-threader that is indeed very handy for her shaky hands and poor old eyesight. It has a speed control button that is great for when she can get down that very last stitch perfectly. Beginners like me can be relieved that the drop-in bobbin and simple controls are user-friendly too. There will no longer be a day where we would have to pain-stakingly hand-sew our Halloween costumes anymore. Heck, this machine also has a sewing pattern to cater for my specific skill level. If I am lucky enough to win this SL500, you can be rest assured that I will be putting all of these fantastic features to good use. Fingers crossed!

My old sewing machine Singer, which was given to me as my wedding trousseau was stolen by my tenant while I was living overseas. Since then, everything I need to sew is my hand and with failing eyesight, treading the needle is even a task these days. Would love to have your giveaway so that I can teach my daughter how to use it and we can start making new creations together.

What an amazing giveaway. My mother used to sew all of your clothes as well as curtains and bedding, nothing beat the love that came from her home made items.I would watch her put bits and pieces together to create something that gave her pure job. Since we have all grown up and left home she hasn’t been sewing much but I would love to gift this to her and get those creative juices flowing!

I have lost some weight (Yah!) and my pants and shirts no longer fit. As a treat and congratulations I would like to take them in. A great reward for the hard work put in.

I want to own my own Sl500 Simplicity by Brother Sewing Machine so I can learn how to get creative and reel into the sewing trend by beginning my sewing journey with a new Brother sewing machine which would give me the chance to try and recreate your amazing crafts that have inspired me to enter this competition and then sew on to make some great Aussie fashion statements with the help from CraftGossip! 🙂

Because of my uncommon size (I am quite sporty but short) we have to give every item to alterations, which is really night mare and add 20-30% of each item. This is definitely a nice way to solve this issue and also to create a new hobby

I’d love one so I can start learning how to make clothes for myself and my boys

Thanks for the chance, this is my dream machine and I’m sure my mum would appreciate not having to share hers anymore.

A quality machine leads to quality results. I am the sewer at home who uses my grandmothers hand me down. I really want this so I can get my wife excited about sewing too. We have 3 daughters and I think it’s really important that Taylor and seamstress skills are preserved. A quality item like this would have the whole family around the table at night.
