Review: Design your own shirts with ShirtsMyWay.com

June 13, 2012 by Vikram Goyal

We recently ran a giveaway for ShirtsMyWay.com, where you can custom design your own shirts selecting fabric, styles, lengths, cuffs and so on. We had the chance to design our own shirt, and decided to review the site in the process.

ShirtsMyWay.com is not the first site to offer custom designed shirts, but it is certainly very innovative. The custom design process was straight forward, simple and easy to follow.

The first step is to pick your fabric. ShirtsMyWay.com provides you 86 different fabrics to choose from and if you don’t find one to suit you, well, you must be very hard to please :). One nifty thing here is that you can make the selection of your fabric on the whole shirt, or different parts of the shirt. So, if you are so inclined, you could have the main fabric of your shirt in “Night Fever” while the collar and the pockets are in “Island Lily”. Whatever makes you stand out!

Next step is to design the basic parts of your shirt. Frankly, there were so many options that it was hard for me to choose. You have multiple options for each part of your shirt: from the collar to the pocket. You could, if confused, just go with the standards which are automatically selected.

Two handy tricks make this process simple. First, a summary of your shirt design is listed right next to your shirt, and second, the shirt itself changes as you change options.

If all this customization is not enough for you, then you can still get picky about the buttons, the button holes, EPAU loops, collar stays and monograms. This is in the next step called (very fittingly) “The Details”.

Finally, it is time to provide the measurements and this is where I believe ShirtsMyWay.com differs from the rest of the custom design industry. They offer three ways for you to give them the measurements – Body measurements, Shirt measurements and Standard sizes.

I picked Shirt Measurements because I already had a shirt that I liked and wanted to get it in another color. Voila! I brought that shirt out, measured it with very helpful hints from ShirtsMyWay.com and that was it!

I got my new shirt within 10 days of ordering and now I have two favourite shirts that are exactly alike except in color!

If you haven’t given ShirtsMyWay.com a chance yet, you should. If nothing else, you will have fun designing your own shirt, playing with fabric, design and details. And with prices starting at just $75 (including delivery), it is one of the cheapest ways to get your own custom designed shirt! Go to ShirtsMyWay.com now!

    That’s a lovely post.

Summer Headband Knitting Patterns

Some knitters have trouble coming up with projects they can both knit and wear when it’s warm outside. Especially if you’re not ready for garments (thought tank tops and summer tops are great first garment projects!) it might seem like there’s nothing to do when it’s hot outside.

One way to remedy this situation is by knitting headbands. Headbands are great any time of year to keep hair out of your face and make you look a little more pulled together without any effort. Wider headbands double as ear warmers when it gets colder, but skinnier ones are great throughout the year.

A couple of great examples are from designer Elly Donner, who has a set of headband knitting patterns on Ravelry you can buy individually or as an ebook. Homebody, shown here, is worked in garter stitch (the ties are crocheted but you could also use I-cord), while Slipstream uses slipped stitches and garter ridges, and Sounds of Spring has little cables. The patterns use DK weight yarn and are a great way to use a little leftover yarn from another project.

I also recently came across the lovely Plush Braided Headband by Yevgeniya Li. A free pattern on Ravelry, this wider design is covered in lush cables for a sleek and fancy look. It uses worsted weight yarn and you can customize the length for a perfect fit.

Celeste Knitwear’s Spikelet is a simple twisted headband with columns of eyelet lace to keep it from being too heavy. It’s worked flat and sewn together to make the twist, and uses DK weight yarn. It has three sizes available.

This skinny lace headband from Lusi Knits is another cute choice. It calls for fine weight cotton yarn, but you could use heavier yarn if you have it on hand to make a wider headband (or use any fine yarn you have available). It uses ties to customize the fit.

And if you want to go super basic but still really cute, try the easy ring headband from Lulu Pattern. The sample is knit pretty wide, but you could make a narrower version if you want, and the little ring turns it from a plain loop into a bow with very little extra work. It calls for worsted weight yarn but you could also use whatever weight you like for this one to change up the look and size.
