A hot water bottle isn’t the most glamorous thing in the linen cupboard, is it? Give it a little knitted jumper, though, and suddenly it looks like something you’d happily wrap up as a gift. Add a favourite colour, a lovely bit of texture or a cheerful stripe, and a very practical household item becomes rather personal.
I like knitting projects that earn their keep. A hot water bottle cover is small enough to fit in your knitting bag, useful enough to justify casting on another one, and a good excuse to use yarn that has been waiting patiently for its moment. The free download includes a deliberately snug collar, so pay attention to the finishing instructions when checking the fit. This would suit a knitter comfortable with basic stitches who is ready to tackle buttonholes and seaming. There’s something rather sweet about a hot water bottle dressed like a tiny vintage cardigan. This free Patons design has that nostalgic feeling, with five buttons and a softly brushed finish in the suggested Alpaca Blend yarn. It’s a lovely possibility for gift knitters who enjoy choosing the buttons almost as much as choosing the yarn.

Lincraft’s cover is knitted from the top down in the round using double-pointed needles. Three strands of the suggested Soft&Luxe yarn are held together to create its chunky fabric. Although the pattern is described as easy, I’d recommend it to knitters already comfortable managing small-circumference knitting and several strands at once. It’s an interesting alternative if you prefer making the neck first and working down towards the base.
A cable gives a hot water bottle cover that lovely miniature-Aran-jumper feeling. Keep Me Warm uses DROPS Snow, with cables and textured stitches bringing interest to the surface. Both versions are worked from the bottom up in DROPS Snow and are intended for a bottle approximately 32 cm long and 19 cm wide. The striped option is worth considering if you enjoy changing colours without following a stranded motif chart. Pick the Nordic version when you fancy a little more concentration and a distinctly festive finish.
Start with the yarn weight and gauge specified by the designer. A cover knitted in DK will behave differently from one made in chunky wool, and substituting whatever happens to be nearest your knitting chair can change the fit considerably.
Think about washing, too. If the cover is a gift, include the yarn’s care instructions so the recipient knows whether it needs a gentle hand wash or can go through an appropriate machine cycle. Removable covers make that care much easier.
