More Bernie Mittens Knitting Patterns

January 22, 2021 by Sarah White

Knitters are quick to jump on a fiber-related theme, and since I shared the Bernie mittens colorwork chart yesterday I’ve seen more than half a dozen more Bernie mittens knitting patterns pop up on Raverly and elsewhere. Let’s take a look!

You can find all sorts of Bernie-themed projects and products on Etsy.

Vermont’s Finest by Meg Harlan is another free one that uses a basic mitten pattern and uses colorwork inspired by Bernie’s mittens, though this one includes the pattern on both sides. It should be noted the chart hasn’t been knit, even by the designer, but she says she will update as needed once she’s knit herself a pair.

Kate Roarty’s Bernie Mitts include colourwork on the front, a solid blue portion on the palm side and a green and white colorwork section on the thumb and the rest of the palm. This is probably the most authentic in look to the original. It’s knit flat and seamed. The pattern is free through Jan. 31, after which it will be $6.

Lion Brand’s Grumpy Chic Mittens use a charted pattern on the back of the hand and a solid color on the palm side, with whatever colors you aren’t working with carried along and woven in across the palm, making them extra cozy. They’re worked in the round and you can download the free pattern or buy a kit with all the colors you need.

Bernie’s Big Mood Mittens from Jess Anderson are another free design as yet unknit. The chart is inspired by Bernie’s mittens and there is colorwork on both sides, with a little something extra on the palm.

Alice Glass has a charted pair where the same color chart is repeated on both sides of the mitten in her Uncle Bernie’s Upcycled Mittens pattern.

Tommy Schafer stitched their mitts already and has a pattern in two sizes called M4A Mittens (Bernie’s Mittens), which sell for $6. They’re worked in worsted weight yarn for super warmth and quick knitting.

Marly Bird has knit and crocheted versions on her website she calls Feel the Heat.

Melissa Anderson whipped up a pair in worsted weight called The Bernies, which is available for free on Ravelry.

Andrea Rygel also drew out a chart and added it to a basic mitten recipe you can find under the name Bernie Mittens on Ravelry.

And Lauren McIlroy stitched up some Bernie inspired mittens in bulky yarn (colorwork on the front and blue on the back) called Vermont Mittens, which you can download for $3.

If you see any other Bernie Mittens knitting patterns, let me know and I’ll add them to the post!

Want to knit a Bernie-inspired project without making mittens? We’ve got a great collection of Sanders-style knitting patterns, and I knit a Sanders Cowl using the iconic colorwork.
