  3. I read loads including a lot of Ebooks (amazing what you can get free- and so many where I’vebbrought more after trying an author for free!) but my tablet gobbles juice so not really practical for reading. Plus the screen reflects sooooo badly. Please help My Book addiction!

  9. The tablet would give me the opportunity to download instructions and patterns for my craft projects and have them more mobile. I don’t craft at my desk with my stand alone computer, so this would give me the ability to have that mobility.

  178. I need something easy to use for Mom – she’s 88 and has never been on the internet. She has an old 386 chip computer, still running Windows 98, which, of course, no longer connects to the internet. She won’t accept a new computer, as she’s afraid none of the software she’s familiar with will be compatible, and she’s right. This would be a great way for her to get connected. I bought it against the advice of some of my friends who told me that wisdom consisted in buying a tab or a smartphone, and that only fools read on the Kindle.   571. I would greatly appreciate receiving a Kindle Fire. I not only love to read; but, also, do many different kind of crafts. Unfortunately, I have a difficult doing either; due to the damage Multiple Sclerosis has done to my eye sight. The ability to enlarge the text on books and patterns; and also to be able to take them with me wherever I go would be beyond words. While I can increase the text on my computer, it chains me to this one spot to read or co crafts. Neither is a very satisfying experience. The Kindle Fire’s ability to give me the freedom sit in a chair in the comfort of my living room and do cross stitch; to be able to read in bed again or knit while waiting to see a doctor would be immeasurable.

  640. I would like to win this for my nine year old daughter who has been bugging me for a tablet. She loves to read but unfortunately, the library is very limited on what she can get her hands on. Amazon has everything under the sun. I can also control “game time” or “whatever time” on this. Sadly, my daughter Serenity had a love of school and learning until this year. This year, the teacher she has seems very old school, very disconnected from her students. Not putting the teacher down, just saying for whatever reason, she doesn’t seem to latch onto my daughter’s strong points and then challenge them. The teachers that she had in the past, who inspired her and encouraged her drive, are busy with their other students. All my daughter has is her reading. (I just purchased a scrapbooking program which has a pdf instruction manual that is over 200 pages.)   844. I would give this to my son who is learning disabled…he had to make the choice between tv and the internet…he chose the internet for his to go internet capable phone…so this would be nice to be able to watch tv and see more that his small phone!!! would make such a nice Christmas present!

  849. Oh the possibilities- I can take my patterns with me wherever Im trying to craft with out them getting all dog eared, access to more books with less trips to the library, change font size for when the glasses arent handy and sharing reading with the kids. It would be awesome!

Make Your Knitting Machine Scarves Better

I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve shared any patterns for our circular knitting machine users. I know these devices aren’t for everyone but even though I much prefer knitting by hand, it is kind of fun to crank things out on these machines.

One of the most common early projects for a circular knitting machine is a scarf. Which makes sense, because it’s just one long tube and you can make it as long as you like.

One problem that comes from knitting scarves on the circular knitting machine, though, is that it can be hard to know how to finish the ends of the tube so that it looks like a finished scarf and not a tube of knitting.

If you’re not a knitter or crocheter, the most basic way to finish a circular knitting machine scarf is just by cinching up the ends and maybe adding a pompom to each end to cover up any hole that might still be visible at the end.

But if you have a little knitting or crochet skill or are willing to learn, there are a lot of different options for closing up the ends of a scarf. And this would also be true if you hand knit a tube scarf!

I recently wrote a post over at Our Daily Craft that includes five different ways to close up the ends of a tube scarf:

  • the simple cinching method mentioned above
  • sewing the stitches together
  • three needle bind off
  • grafting
  • crochet bind off

Grafting is my favorite because I feel like it gives the cleanest, closest to a seamless look. If you’re a knitter you may already know how to do it but even if you don’t it’s not that hard to learn.
