Mini Mending Mondays: Save a Favorite Cardigan with a Small Darned Repair

There is always one cardigan that gets more love than the rest. It lives on the back of a chair, comes on every trip, and gets thrown on for chilly mornings, late-night tea, and “I’m just nipping outside for a second” moments that somehow become half an hour. So when a small hole appears, it feels worth saving.

This week’s Mini Mending Mondays article is about how to do a simple darned repair on a cardigan or lightweight knit.

What you can mend

This method is ideal for:

  • small holes in cardigans
  • worn spots in knitwear
  • snag damage
  • light sweater repairs

What you need

  • darning needle
  • matching yarn, embroidery wool, or thread
  • small darning egg or firm object, optional
  • scissors

How to do it

Place the damaged area over a darning mushroom, egg, or even a small jar if that is what you have handy. Start by making a series of straight anchor stitches vertically across the hole. Then weave horizontal stitches over and under those threads to fill the gap.

Keep your tension even and aim for a soft woven repair rather than a tight pull. The idea is to support the knit without making the area stiff.

Tips before you stitch

Choose a repair yarn that is close in weight to the original knit if possible. Too thick and it will feel bulky. Too thin and it may not be strong enough.

And yes, you are officially allowed to feel very old-school and clever while darning. It is part of the experience.

Why this little repair is worth doing

Darning looks far more intimidating than it really is. Once you understand the basic weave, it becomes one of those quietly satisfying mending skills that makes you feel wonderfully capable.
