Gabriel’s Garden Hand Painted Candles

July 10, 2008 by SandraW

Gabriel’s Garden Lavender specializes in natural bath and body products. They grow their own lavender and use the essential oil for a multitude of products. Shown here are some hand painted taper candles depicting lavender.

They also have aromatherapy soy candles scented with lavender essential oil. The scent of lavender is very calming so it’s often used for anxiety and insomnia.

Lavender is used for various skin problems and is a natural insect repellent. I tried mixing several drops of lavender with almond oil and it did work because the mosquitoes didn’t touch me. That blend would also work for massage oil.

I love the smell of lavender and often use it in candles just to have that familiar comforting scent in the air. Gabriel’s Garden Lavender also sells their lavender essential oil if you want to try it for your own creations.

With the arrival of the Japanese Encephalitis Mosquito, it has become important to make sure those pesky mosquitos are not snacking on you.  Japanese encephalitis symptoms include Headache, neck pain, and Nausea. .  Japanese encephalitis does have a vaccine and you should contact your local medical professional for information on obtaining this vaccination.

But how else can you protect yourself against mosquitos? Keep mosquitoes away from exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks, you can even wear a mosquito net hat.  Tuck shirts into pants and pants into socks to cover gaps in your clothing where mosquitoes can get to your skin.  For a natural repellent use essential oils for making your own Mosquito bug spray repellent. Add oils to water and spray into the air or add small drops to your clothing.  Use a Necklace or Bracelet oil diffuser to help repel mosquitoes naturally.  Insect bracelets and necklaces are great for children too.

Leaf Learning Activities for Kids

There are lots of things you can do with leaves in the classroom and at home, and fun ways to learn about leaves as they start changing color in the fall.

Learn about different kinds of leaves and match them to their trees with this printable from Montessori Nature. It includes 10 kinds of trees and their leaves to match with. If you have those trees nearby you can also find the real leaves to match with.

Of course if you’re going on a leaf hunt yourself, you’ll want to save some of those leaves the kids find in their own leaf collection and identification books. You can learn how to make your own from Dappled Skies and DIYs. Or turn your leaf peeping into a sticky leaf scavenger hunt with this idea from Little Pine Learners.

There are a lot of easy art activities you can do with leaves, such as the classic rubbing (check out a tutorial if you need it from Laura Radniecki), complete a picture with half a leaf and learn about symmetry (like in this post from NurtureStore) or drawn in, on and around leaves to make fun art as shown in this idea from Artful Parent.

Make your leaves into people, paint on them or with them; there are so many possible ideas!

Trace your leaves, label them with what kinds of trees they came from, and then play a matching game like this one from Preschool Toolkit.

Early Learning Ideas has some great printables on the parts of a tree and a leaf, the life cycle of an oak tree and leaf sorting that you can find on Teachers Pay Teachers. Or check out the leaf investigation worksheet from Turner Tots.

Looking for more leaf fun? Check out these ideas for leaf activities that don’t use real leaves, and these that do. And let me know what your favorite way to play and learn with leaves is!
