DIY Wood Flower Boutoniere

July 17, 2019 by Shellie Wilson

Let me start by saying Boutonniere has to be one of the hardest words to type over and over again. Wooden roses have become very popular with home decor in the past few years, so it is no wonder they have made their way into weddings. These Wooden roses have been colored to suit the bridal color scheme and are the perfect no-fuss DIY long long-lasting Boutonniere. These roses not only look lovely on the day but will continue to bloom for months or years afterward. They could be gifted to Grandparents after the wedding to wear as scarf pins or hat pins too.

You can see the full tutorial on how to make your own DIY Wood fLower Boutonniere here.

We are updating this post to inlcude information about painting wood flowers or coloring them to suit your wedding color theme.

Materials You’ll Need:

Wood Flowers: Purchase or gather the wood flowers you intend to paint. They come in various shapes and sizes, offering ample opportunities for your artistic expression.

Acrylic Paint: Choose high-quality acrylic paints in the colors of your choice. Acrylic paints provide vibrant and long-lasting color.

Paint Brushes: Have a variety of brushes on hand, including small detail brushes for intricate work and larger brushes for broader strokes.

Palette or Plate: Use a palette or disposable plate to mix and blend your paint colors.

Water and Paper Towels: Keep a container of water and paper towels nearby for cleaning brushes and dabbing excess paint.

Protective Covering: Lay down a protective covering on your work surface to prevent paint splatters and spills.

Sealer (Optional): Consider using a clear acrylic sealer to protect your painted wood flowers and enhance their durability.

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace
Set up a well-ventilated and well-lit workspace. Lay down your protective covering to keep your work surface clean.

Step 2: Select Your Color Palette
Choose the acrylic paint colors you want to use for your wood flowers. Consider your overall design and the color scheme you’re aiming for.

Step 3: Prepare Your Paints
Squeeze a small amount of each paint color onto your palette or disposable plate. If you’re mixing custom colors, blend them on the palette.

Step 4: Paint the Base Color
Dip your brush into the desired paint color and apply an even coat to the wood flower. Start with the larger areas and work your way to the finer details.

Step 5: Add Details and Shadows
Use smaller brushes to add intricate details, such as petal veining or leaf patterns. Create depth by adding shadows and highlights to give dimension to your painted wood flower.

Step 6: Blend and Layer Colors
Experiment with blending and layering colors to create depth and texture. Acrylic paints dry quickly, allowing you to build up layers relatively fast.

Step 7: Allow to Dry
Let your painted wood flower dry completely before handling or applying additional layers of paint. This prevents smudging and mixing of colors.

Step 8: Apply Sealer (Optional)
If you want added protection and a glossy finish, apply a clear acrylic sealer according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 9: Display and Enjoy
Once your painted wood flowers are dry and sealed (if desired), they’re ready to be displayed as part of your decor or incorporated into your projects.

Tips for Success:

Start with a light base coat and gradually build up color for more control.
Use a dry brush technique to create a weathered or distressed look.
Experiment with different brush sizes and shapes for varying effects.
Reference real flowers or images for color and detail inspiration.
Practice on spare wood flowers before working on your final pieces.
Painting wood flowers is a delightful way to add your personal touch to decor, gifts, and more. With practice and patience, you’ll unlock a world of creative possibilities, transforming simple wooden blooms into vibrant works of art that radiate your style and imagination.
