DIY Emergency Candles – Wow Never Knew These

June 9, 2015 by Shellie Wilson

Disasters can happen at any time, and it’s always best to be prepared. But what do you do when you’re caught off guard and can’t make it to the store to stock up on emergency supplies? The answer is simple: make your own candles with items you may already have in your home.

Not only does making your own candles save you from the stress of last-minute shopping, it’s also a great way to repurpose items that you might otherwise throw away. For example, did you know that tuna cans can make great candle molds? And that butter can be used as a makeshift wax?

While some of these DIY candle ideas may sound unconventional, they are tried and tested by DIY enthusiasts all over the world. The orange candle is a classic DIY candle that you can easily make with just an orange peel and some oil, and the crayon candle is a fun project for kids and adults alike.

Of course, it’s important to remember that not all DIY candle ideas are safe or effective. It’s essential to do your research and make sure you’re using safe materials and following proper candle-making techniques to avoid any hazards.

In any case, making your own candles is a great way to save money, be more self-sufficient, and have some fun in the process. So why not give it a try and see what creative candle ideas you can come up with? Who knows, you might just discover your new favorite hobby.

Let me not start a Crayola feud again like this post so I won’t comment on how safe that might be.

How to make Emergency candles

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you need a candle but don’t have one on hand? It can be frustrating and even dangerous if you’re caught in an emergency situation without a source of light. But fear not, because with a few simple household items, you can create your own emergency candle in no time.

What you’ll need:

An empty tin can (such as a tuna can)
Cooking oil (vegetable, olive, or canola will work)
A cotton ball or piece of cloth
Matches or a lighter
Step 1: Fill the can with oil
Take your empty tin can and fill it about 3/4 of the way with cooking oil. Be sure to leave some room at the top so the oil doesn’t overflow when it heats up.

Step 2: Make the wick
Take your cotton ball or piece of cloth and shape it into a long, thin wick. You can also use a piece of string or shoelace if you don’t have cotton on hand.

Step 3: Add the wick
Place your wick in the center of the oil-filled can, making sure it’s submerged in the oil. You can use a toothpick or chopstick to push the wick down if it floats to the top.

Step 4: Light the candle
Use a match or lighter to light the top of the wick. The oil will slowly heat up and the flame will continue to burn until the oil runs out.

And there you have it, a simple and effective emergency candle made from household items. This candle may not burn as brightly or for as long as a store-bought candle, but in a pinch, it can provide you with the light you need to navigate your way through a power outage or emergency situation.

It’s important to note that you should never leave a candle unattended, especially one made from household items. Keep the candle away from any flammable materials and make sure to extinguish it when you’re finished using it.

By knowing how to make your own emergency candle, you can be better prepared for unexpected situations and have a greater sense of self-sufficiency. So next time you find yourself in need of a candle, just look around your house for the materials you need to create your own.
