DIY Beach Themed Wedding or Party Favors

September 11, 2018 by Shellie Wilson

There is something so charming about a beach wedding that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Yes, we all love the floaty dresses, barefoot vows, driftwood signs, and sunset photos — but it’s often the tiny details that guests remember. And these DIY beach wedding escort cards are exactly that sort of detail.

They’re fun, affordable, a little bit cheeky, and surprisingly elegant once you give them a coat of metallic gold paint. Who knew a packet of plastic sea animals could go from toy box chaos to wedding table darling in one afternoon?

This is a lovely idea for a seaside wedding, coastal bridal shower, destination wedding, nautical reception, or even a summer anniversary party. It works especially well if you’re already planning a relaxed coastal theme with shells, sand, candles, driftwood, or blue-and-white table styling.

And if you’re still working through your reception layout, you may also want to read our guide to <a href=”https://craftgossip.com/wedding-seating-chart-how-to-make-everyone-happy/”>making a wedding seating chart that keeps everyone happy</a>. Escort cards are cute, but they do need to tell people where they’re actually going — otherwise Aunt Linda will absolutely sit herself beside the buffet and call it destiny.

Why These DIY Beach Wedding Escort Cards Work So Well

The beauty of this project is that it looks far more polished than the supplies suggest. Plastic sea creatures are inexpensive, easy to find, and lightweight enough to move around your reception display. Once spray painted in gold, pearl, champagne, copper, or matte white, they suddenly look like little coastal keepsakes rather than children’s party favors.

They also add texture to a wedding table. Flat paper escort cards can look lovely, of course, but a small 3D object gives your seating display more personality. Guests can pick up their card, smile at the little turtle or seahorse attached to it, and immediately understand the beachy theme.

This would pair beautifully with other handmade wedding details such as <a href=”https://craftgossip.com/diy-wedding-card-boxes-you-can-make-yourself/”>a DIY wedding card box</a> or a soft coastal setup inspired by our <a href=”https://craftgossip.com/wedding-theme-beach-camping/”>vintage beach wedding theme ideas</a>.

Supplies You’ll Need

Plastic sea animals or sea creatures
Metallic gold spray paint
Newspaper, cardboard, or a drop cloth for spraying
Cardstock or pretty paper
Scissors or a paper trimmer
Hole punch
Gold twine, baker’s twine, ribbon, or thin cord
Fine-tip pen, calligraphy pen, or printer
Shallow tray, basket, wooden box, or display table
Clean sand, shells, sea glass, or small pebbles for styling

For supplies, Amazon is useful for bulk packs of plastic sea animals, metallic spray paint, paper trimmers, and cardstock if you’re making a large batch. Etsy can also be a lovely place to look for printable beach wedding escort card templates or handmade coastal embellishments if you want something a little more custom without designing the tags from scratch.

How To Make DIY Gold Sea Creature Escort Cards

Start by choosing your sea animals. Turtles, starfish, seahorses, whales, dolphins, crabs, octopuses, and small fish all work well. Try to choose pieces with a flat-ish surface or a natural gap where you can tie on a tag.

Lay the plastic sea creatures on newspaper or cardboard in a well-ventilated outdoor area. Spray them lightly with metallic gold paint, using several thin coats rather than one heavy coat. This helps avoid sticky patches, drips, and that dreaded “why does this still feel tacky three days later?” moment.

Allow the first side to dry completely, then flip the pieces over and spray the underside. If your plastic toys are very shiny, a plastic primer can help the paint grip better. Once the paint is dry, you can also add a clear sealer if the escort cards will be handled a lot or if your wedding is outdoors.

While the sea creatures dry, prepare your guest tags. Cut cardstock into small rectangles or luggage-tag shapes. Write each guest’s name and table number by hand, or print them if you prefer a cleaner uniform look. A soft ivory cardstock, pale blue, sand beige, or crisp white all suit this project beautifully.

Punch a small hole in each tag and thread through a length of twine or ribbon. Tie the tag around the sea creature so the name is easy to read. Don’t tie too tightly, especially if you’re using small pieces, as you don’t want to bend or tear the cardstock.

Display Ideas For A Beach Wedding Escort Card Table

The display is what makes this project feel wedding-ready. A shallow wooden tray filled with clean sand is the easiest option and gives that instant beachy look. You can nestle the gold sea creatures into the sand so they sit neatly in rows.

For a more polished reception look, arrange the escort cards alphabetically by surname. Guests are usually standing with a drink, a handbag, a small child, or all three, so the easier you make it for them to find their name, the better.

You can also style the display with:

Small shells
Sea glass
Battery-operated votive candles
Driftwood pieces
Mini lanterns
Blue glass bottles
A small framed sign that says “Find Your Table”

If you’re making your own signs too, this is a good place to link through to <a href=”https://craftgossip.com/diy-chalkboard-wedding-signs/”>DIY chalkboard wedding signs</a> for another budget-friendly wedding craft idea.

Tips Before You Make A Full Batch

Make one sample before committing to all 80 or 120 escort cards. Spray paint can behave differently depending on the plastic, humidity, and drying time, so it’s worth testing first.

Check that your tags are large enough to read. Tiny tags look cute in photos, but guests need to find their names quickly. Wedding receptions are not the place for a squinting competition.

Use a spreadsheet before writing or printing names. This helps avoid duplicate names, misspelled surnames, and awkward table-number mix-ups.

Make extras. Someone will be added late, someone will bring a plus-one, and someone will decide three days before the wedding that they are now gluten-free, single, and seated at a different table. Weddings are magical like that.

Variations To Match Your Wedding Style

For a more elegant wedding, use pearl white spray paint instead of gold and tie the cards with silk ribbon.

For a tropical wedding, use bright coral, turquoise, or seafoam green tags.

For a rustic coastal wedding, use kraft cardstock and jute twine.

For a modern wedding, use matte black sea animals with white tags and gold writing.

For a whimsical wedding, let each table have a different sea creature theme — turtles for Table 1, starfish for Table 2, seahorses for Table 3, and so on.

You could even let the sea creature double as a tiny wedding favor. It’s not a huge gift, but it is a sweet little keepsake, especially for guests who love quirky handmade details.

Where These Work Best

These DIY beach wedding escort cards are ideal for:

Beach weddings
Coastal receptions
Destination weddings
Nautical weddings
Summer bridal showers
Sea-themed engagement parties
Tropical resort weddings
Backyard weddings with a coastal theme

They’re especially good for couples trying to keep wedding costs under control without making everything look homemade in the wrong way. There’s homemade, and then there’s handmade with intention — and this project lands firmly in the second camp.

A Sweet Little Coastal Detail Guests Will Notice

Wedding crafts don’t always need to be complicated to be memorable. Sometimes the best DIY ideas are the ones that take an ordinary object and give it a clever little transformation.

These gold sea creature escort cards are affordable, easy to batch-make, and full of personality. They bring just enough coastal charm to your reception table without requiring advanced crafting skills, expensive supplies, or a full weekend of glue-gun regret.

If you’re planning a beach wedding and want a handmade detail that feels playful but still pretty, this is one of those projects worth saving.
