Crochet Pattern Review: Shelby Skirt – Lion Brand

August 13, 2025 by Shellie Wilson

Flirty, comfy, and totally wearable — this is crochet fashion done right.

If you’ve ever wanted to crochet a piece that looks straight out of your favourite slow-fashion boutique, the Shelby Skirt is calling your name. This cute and comfy piece is trending hard right now — and for good reason. It’s giving boho picnic vibes one day, beachy cover-up the next, and Sunday market strolls all year round.

The Shelby Skirt is that rare blend of comfy and flattering. It has a gently flared shape that skims the hips, a sweet drawstring waistband for that perfect fit, and a lovely allover stitch texture that gives it visual interest without being too bulky. I love that it’s flowy without feeling oversized — it hits that sweet spot between playful and practical.

Style-wise, you can dress it up with a tucked-in blouse and sandals or throw it on with a tee and sneakers. I’ve even seen it layered with tights and boots in cooler weather — so yes, it can be a year-round piece.

This pattern is beginner-friendly, especially if you’ve made a few flat projects and are ready to try something wearable. It’s worked top-down in the round, which means no seaming (praise be), and the stitches are simple — mostly half double crochets, with some front and back post work to give it shape and structure.

The waistband is adjustable thanks to the drawstring, and the pattern includes multiple sizes for a flexible, comfortable fit. I also love that it’s easy to lengthen or shorten depending on your style — mini, midi, or maxi, this skirt can do it all.

Lion Brand recommends 24/7 Cotton, which is a brilliant choice here. It’s smooth, crisp, and holds its shape beautifully — no saggy skirt syndrome after a few wears. Plus, it comes in a rainbow of colours, from soft neutrals to sunny brights. I’ve seen Shelby Skirts in terracotta, mustard, dusty blue — they all look stunning.

If you wanted a bit more drape or softness, a cotton-linen or bamboo blend would work nicely too. Just be sure to swatch for gauge!

Stitch Your Favorite Fruit on a Sweater

The other day I saw a post from Pinterest about trends for summer and it said one of them was “cultivating whimsy.”

Well, I don’t know where Pinterest has been all this time, but we’ve been cultivating whimsy here at Craft Gossip for a long time. I love sharing projects that are a little different, things that make you smile when you see them, and will make you smile when you knit them and wear them or use them.

Such it is with the Tutti Frutti tee knitting pattern from Bea Creative Knits.

This cute little baby tee is worked top down in the round with contiguous shoulder construction to shape the sleeve caps. There are short rows for the neckline and folded hems with picot edging at the hemline, neckline and edges of the sleeves.

All of this would be great on its own, but then there’s the addition of a super cute fruit icon, which is added with duplicate stitch. There are a lot of options, including strawberry, banana, orange, cherries, watermelon, lemon, blueberries, kiwi, peach, dragon fruit, apple and pear, so it’s likely you can add on your favorite fruit.

It is offered in eight sizes, to fit a bust measurement ranging from 28-30 inches (71-76 cm) to 56-58 inches (142-147 cm). The design is meant to be worn with around 6.3 inches/16 cm of negative ease, but you can choose the fit you prefer. There’s also optional bust and waist shaping included in the pattern if you want to make it even curvier.

This is considered an advanced beginner or intermediate project because of all the skills involved, but it’s sure to be a lot of fun even if some of these techniques are new to you.
