St. Peter’s Parish in Cavite City, Philippines started a money making venture for prisoners by teaching them how to make candles. Father Dominador Medina came up with idea and his friend Marian Navarrete volunteered to instruct the prisoners.
The money that they make candle making is then sent on to help their families. When they are finally released, they’ll have a legitimate skill that they can use to continue making a living. Apparently most of the inmates in the program sold illegal drugs previously.
Hopefully, it helps turn a few people around and keep them out of trouble. “The inmates were happy because they found something to get busy with and at the same time, earn something out of it. When we ran out of materials, they were the ones very eager that we buy already so they could resume making the candles,” said Medina. (See Candle Making Brightens Prison Life for more information.)
