A Periodic Table That Tells You How To Use It

Last year my children spent their whole school holidays learning the periodic table song. I can assure you by the 3rd week, it wasn’t so impressive. Then the first opportunity they had to use their new found talent, they both refused to sing it for their Science teacher. I was not only disappointed, I was furious that I had endured the practice for nothing. I mean it’s like a party trick right? You bring it out to impress your friends, nope and still till this day they do not sing it in public. Full volume in the car, however, is totally acceptable. Learning the periodic table song is one thing, but you still need to know what each scientific element is actually for right?

If you are sitting there thinking what are you talking about? What Is a periodic table?

The periodic table is a tabular arrangement of the chemical elements, ordered by their atomic number, electron configuration, and recurring chemical properties. I can only think of science class where I would need to know this, oh and that one time at a trivia night.

Kids love to learn things in very different ways, this free printable shows them what each element is actually for whilst teaching them the table. It’s a fun way of learning something.

Shark Week Learning for Kids

Shark Week generally happens in July, but any time is a good time to learn more about sharks. 

First, start with some fun whale facts like these from Kids Craft Room. Here I learned about the dwarf lantern shark, which is the smallest shark and only grows to about 6-8 inches (about 15-20 cm) long. It also emits light. How cool is that?

Remember the “Sharknado” movie? A Few Shortcuts turned the combination of sharks and tornadoes into a fun science activity. You’ll need a bottle connector for this project but otherwise should have everything you need on hand. Use their template to make your sharks out of aluminum foil. So fun!
