8 Things To Make With Antique Windows

July 1, 2014 by Larissa Coleman

Whether you have a few antique windows laying around, or you have been searching long are far from the perfect set, you know that they are not easy to come by.  When you do find some, you want to have the perfect project for them.

Well, today we have brought you 8 things to make with upcycled or recycled antique windows.

All of the projects keep the natural qualities that the antique window holds, and still use the glass inside of them.  Browse through and find which one you like best and give it a go.

I’m sure you won’t be disappointed with the results.  Looking for more upcycling ideas? Check out these Upcycling books.

Before we get into them, here are some safety tips on working with old antique windows.

Safety tips for working with antique windows

When repurposing antique windows, it’s important to be very careful to ensure that they are used safely and responsibly. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind:

  1. Check the condition of the window: Before repurposing an antique window, carefully inspect it to ensure that it’s in good condition. Check for cracks, chips, or other damage that could compromise its structural integrity. Also, check for any signs of lead paint or other hazardous materials that may be present.
  2. Consider the weight: Antique windows can be quite heavy, especially if they are made of wood or metal. Make sure that you have a sturdy frame or support structure in place before installing the window to prevent it from falling or shifting.
  3. Use appropriate hardware: When installing an antique window, use hardware that is designed to support its weight and size. Don’t use nails or screws that are too short or weak to hold the window securely in place.
  4. Avoid altering the window: If possible, avoid altering the original structure of the window. Don’t cut or sand down the frame, and don’t remove any original glass panes unless absolutely necessary. Altering an antique window can significantly reduce its value and may also compromise its structural integrity.
  5. Consider the location: Finally, consider where you will be installing the window. Make sure that it’s not exposed to extreme temperatures or moisture, as this can cause the wood to warp or rot. Also, be mindful of any potential safety hazards, such as sharp edges or loose glass panes.

And with that, let’s get to our list with some really cool ideas. My favorite one is the one that involves a bed! If you have any other ideas please leave them in the comments to share with the rest of our readers.

Let’s start with the amazing coffee table idea that I found when I was looking for.. coffee tables.
