20 Cowl Crochet Patterns For Winter Gifting

Have you ever wondered who invented the cowl? The cowl, a hooded garment, has its origins in the Early Middle Ages. It became the formal attire for those in monastic life, as both St. Jerome and John Cassian refer to its use among monks. Over time, the cowl evolved beyond religious contexts, becoming a fashionable accessory during the Renaissance, often crafted from luxurious fabrics like silk and velvet. Its versatility and historical significance make it a fascinating piece of clothing history.

So with that little snippet of information, let’s jump straight into our roundup of cowls.  These cowls are perfect for making as gifts for loved ones this winter holidays. However I prefer to make cowls for myself, it is something versatile, quick and I can crochet one for every outfit color scheme.
