6 Controversial Decor Concepts You Should Say Yes To

September 8, 2015 by Vikram Goyal

controversial-decor-ideas

In the world of home design, just like in any other design world for that matter, there are concepts that are almost immediately dismissed by the designers, usually because they are considered tacky or too imposing. However, not all of them should be on the black list at all times. There are ways of implementing them with taste, contributing to the overall design. Here are 6 controversial ones you should say yes to.

Artificial plants

Yes, natural ones are always preferred, but careful approach gives artificial plants their spot at your home too. First of all, they are eternal and require only dusting to keep them in shape, which is very convenient for everyone who is either forgettable when it comes to watering, or spends a lot of time outside his or her home failing to give proper attention to natural plants. Secondly, not giving them a central spot in any of the rooms lets them enhance the atmosphere without attracting too much attention. On top of that, nowadays they come in such detail that it takes a close inspection to establish they are not natural.

Wall to wall carpet

Deemed as obsolete, they are rarely used today, without any justifiable reason. Even though they require more attention when it comes to cleaning, the coziness and warmth these carpets provide cannot be overlooked. Additionally, they are great sound isolators. Lastly, they come in so many different patterns and materials that they can contribute to any design idea whatsoever.

Jewelry-like Décor

Old jewelry is often kept in boxes and worn only on special occasions. Once proudly displayed nowadays they seem completely forgotten or deliberately neglected being deemed as too shiny and intrusive. Still, they can be successfully used, elegantly displayed on the corners of mirrors. Furthermore, even thou some would think that decorating your fire place with colorful fire glass is cheesy, give it a chance. The chiaroscuro effect it provides will make an unforgettable atmosphere in your living room.

PVC doors and windows

Just like anything made from artificial material, PVC doors and windows are easily ruled out of popular design ideas. However, they need to return to the scene either due to their longevity, energy efficiency or environmental benefits. If all these positive features are not sufficient, sound isolation and elegant, unobtrusive lines they are finished should make any designer think twice about using them.

Art Reproductions

Only rare amongst us are blessed with an opportunity to hang famous original works of art on their walls. Disregard the purists who say that reproductions have no place on your wall. Framed with taste and done in high quality, any reproduced work of art you like should be displayed. After all, it is you who will enjoy them all the time, others who find them redundant can look elsewhere. However, do not overdo, a few favorite ones will suffice.

Color pattern

Design professionals advise either analogous or complementary color pattern. Still, adding a touch of yellow on a blue base, or mixing green and purple does not necessarily mean that everything will immediately fall apart. A change of focus and some unexpected combinations done with measure and taste will add to the dynamics and originality. Start with small items and go bigger if you like what you see.

Whatever the design standards are and no matter how justified they are that does not mean that the rules cannot be bent now and then for the sake of originality and difference. Feel free to play somewhat and try the forbidden fruit, it often tastes so good.
