Lego Apple Trees
Supplies:
Green paint in 2 different shades
Red paint
Brown paint
Paper
Legos in assorted shapes
Directions:
Squeeze a generous amount of each color of paint on a paper plate.
Instruct the child to make the trunk and the branches first using brown paint. A long skinny lego will work best.
Next, encourage the child to stamp into the green paint. Layer the colors of green and use a variety of legos to create the leaves.
Offer a small lego to create the apples. We found a lego with only 2 connectors was a nice choice.
Allow the project to dry and display.
As the painting is happening, fine motor skills will be used to pinch and hold the slippery legos.
Kids will love the sensation of creating art with a favorite toy, and they will be able to experiment with which side of the lego they prefer to paint with.
Painting with Apples
Supplies:
Paint, we used red, green and yellow
Scissors
Glue
Paper
Apples
Paper Plate
A Knife
Directions:
Begin by cutting a brown paper lunch bag into thin strips.
On a sheet of paper, offer your child a few strips and encourage them to place them somewhat close together, pointing up.
Now, offer your child a few more strips, and instruct them to weave under, over and under again.
Repeat, weaving a strip over, under and over.
Repeat one more time with an under, over, under weave.
Now, glue the ends of the ‘basket’ to the paper.
Slice an apple in half. You can slice vertically or horizontally. We decided to do one of each cut.
Next, place a few generous squirts of paint onto a paper plate. Leave enough room in between colors to allow space for your apple.
Dip the apple into the paint, and firmly press it onto the paper, in the area of the woven basket.
Repeat using all of the colors.
Allow to dry and display.
Crafts and hands-on activities are important for children for several reasons:
- They promote creativity and self-expression: By participating in crafts and hands-on activities, children are able to express themselves and their ideas in a unique and personal way. This allows them to tap into their own creativity and imagination, and to develop their own sense of style and individuality.
- They help to develop fine motor skills: Many crafts and hands-on activities require the use of small muscles in the hands and fingers, which helps to develop fine motor skills. This is important for children as they learn to write and perform other tasks that require dexterity.
- They foster problem-solving and critical thinking: Many crafts and hands-on activities require children to think creatively and critically in order to solve problems and complete the task. This helps to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills that are essential for success in school and in life.
- They provide opportunities for socialization and teamwork: Many crafts and hands-on activities are done in groups or with adult supervision, which provides children with opportunities to socialize and work as part of a team. This helps to develop social skills and teamwork, which are important for children’s overall development.
- They are fun and enjoyable : Children are often more motivated to learn when they are having fun, and crafts and hands-on activities are a fun and enjoyable way for children to learn new skills and explore their interests.
Overall, crafts and hands-on activities are an important way for children to learn and grow, both academically and emotionally. They provide children with a fun and engaging way to develop a wide range of skills and abilities, while also providing opportunities for creativity and self-expression.
