A hot water bottle isn’t the most glamorous thing in the linen cupboard, is it? Give it a little knitted jumper, though, and suddenly it looks like something you’d happily wrap up as a gift. Add a favourite colour, a lovely bit of texture or a cheerful stripe, and a very practical household item becomes rather personal.
I like knitting projects that earn their keep. A hot water bottle cover is small enough to fit in your knitting bag, useful enough to justify casting on another one, and a good excuse to use yarn that has been waiting patiently for its moment. You know the balls I mean—the ones too lovely to part with but never quite enough for a cardigan.
These free hot water bottle cover knitting patterns include straightforward garter stitch, chunky knits, cables and colourwork. There are options for straight needles as well as knitting in the round, so you can choose a project that suits the way you like to knit.
Before choosing, measure your bottle rather than relying on the words “standard size.” Check its width, body length and neck, then compare those measurements with the pattern. A little preparation is much easier than persuading a finished cover to stretch over a bottle it was never going to fit.
If you want a dependable starting point, Emily Bolduan’s design gives you a choice of knitting flat or working in the round. This free DK pattern is worked from the bottom up and uses approximately 170–200 metres of yarn. That flexibility makes it particularly appealing for newer knitters who already have a favourite needle setup. I’d choose a softly variegated yarn and let the simple fabric show off the colour changes.
Charlotte Retter’s Lottie’s Hottie is the sort of approachable project I’d suggest to someone ready to make something useful after their first scarf. The body is worked in garter stitch, with ribbing shaping the neck and two seams completing the cover. It uses chunky yarn and 6 mm needles, with instructions intended for a bottle measuring approximately 20 × 35 cm. The plain body also gives you room to add stripes or a little embroidery once you feel confident.
Amy Pickard’s chunky cover has an appealingly unfussy look, with button details adding a practical finishing touch. The free download includes a deliberately snug collar, so pay attention to the finishing instructions when checking the fit. This would suit a knitter comfortable with basic stitches who is ready to tackle buttonholes and seaming. Download the current version three, which includes the designer’s collar stitch-count correction.
There’s something rather sweet about a hot water bottle dressed like a tiny vintage cardigan. This free Patons design has that nostalgic feeling, with five buttons and a softly brushed finish in the suggested Alpaca Blend yarn. Yarnspirations rates it easy and gives finished measurements of approximately 20.5 × 33 cm. It’s a lovely possibility for gift knitters who enjoy choosing the buttons almost as much as choosing the yarn.
Bendigo Woollen Mills takes a slightly different approach, knitting the cover flat in two pieces before joining them with a double-crochet edging. Designed for Elixir 16 ply, this free pattern uses large needles and includes basic increasing and decreasing. The company gives it its easiest difficulty rating, although you’ll also need a crochet hook for the joining step. If you enjoy both knitting and crochet, the contrasting edge is a pleasing way to bring the two together.
Lincraft’s cover is knitted from the top down in the round using double-pointed needles. Three strands of the suggested Soft&Luxe yarn are held together to create its chunky fabric. Although the pattern is described as easy, I’d recommend it to knitters already comfortable managing small-circumference knitting and several strands at once. It’s an interesting alternative if you prefer making the neck first and working down towards the base.
A cable gives a hot water bottle cover that lovely miniature-Aran-jumper feeling. Keep Me Warm uses DROPS Snow, with cables and textured stitches bringing interest to the surface. This is one I’d suggest for knitters who want a small project to practise cable crossings and reading a chart. A pale or medium solid colour would help the stitch definition stand out beautifully.
Marie Wallin’s Nordic design is a lovely excuse to spend a little time with stranded colourwork. The free pattern uses just two colours throughout, making it a more focused project than a design requiring a whole basket of shades. It was originally developed for a workshop and is intended to fit a standard hot water bottle, though checking your own bottle’s measurements is still worthwhile. Choose this one if you’re comfortable following a colourwork chart and want to practise keeping your floats relaxed.
The name made me smile, and the argyle gives this cover plenty of character. Nadia makes’ free design combines two flat-knitted panels with an intarsia pattern, then brings the held neck stitches together for knitting in the round. It is designed around a roughly two-litre bottle measuring 33 cm high and 20 cm wide. This is a good choice for knitters who enjoy colour placement and don’t mind managing yarn ends in return for a striking finish.
For a handmade Christmas gift with a practical purpose, this DROPS design offers stripes or a Nordic motif. Both versions are worked from the bottom up in DROPS Snow and are intended for a bottle approximately 32 cm long and 19 cm wide. The striped option is worth considering if you enjoy changing colours without following a stranded motif chart. Pick the Nordic version when you fancy a little more concentration and a distinctly festive finish.
Start with the yarn weight and gauge specified by the designer. A cover knitted in DK will behave differently from one made in chunky wool, and substituting whatever happens to be nearest your knitting chair can change the fit considerably.
Think about washing, too. If the cover is a gift, include the yarn’s care instructions so the recipient knows whether it needs a gentle hand wash or can go through an appropriate machine cycle. Removable covers make that care much easier.
A smooth, light-coloured yarn is helpful when you want to see cables or textured stitches clearly. Variegated yarn can look lovely in a simpler pattern, where the colours have room to do their thing.
A knitted cover makes a thoughtful present for someone who appreciates practical handmade gifts. Choose their favourite colour rather than yours—always the difficult part—and check that the cover fits the bottle you’re giving with it.
For a first project, I’d lean towards Lottie’s Hottie or Emily Bolduan’s adaptable design. If you’re in the mood for something more decorative, cables, Nordic motifs and argyle all turn this everyday essential into a satisfying little knitting project.
Follow the bottle manufacturer’s filling and use instructions; a knitted cover does not make an unsafe or damaged bottle safe.
