20 Citronella Mosquito Repellent Candles You Can Make Yourself

August 9, 2020 by Shellie Wilson

Summertime is the perfect season for outdoor gatherings, but with the warm weather comes an unwanted guest: bugs. Mosquitoes, flies, and midges can put a damper on any outdoor activity, but luckily there’s a solution: DIY citronella candles.

Citronella candles are made with a natural insect repellent called citronella oil, which is derived from the leaves and stems of the lemongrass plant. This oil is known for its ability to repel mosquitoes, flies, and other pesky bugs, making it the perfect ingredient for outdoor candles.

Making your own citronella candles is easy and cost-effective. All you need is some soy wax, citronella oil, candle wicks, and some mason jars or other heat-safe containers. You can also add other essential oils, such as lavender or peppermint, to create a custom scent that will help repel bugs even more effectively.

To make the candles, melt the soy wax in a double boiler and add the citronella oil and any other essential oils you’d like to use. Pour the wax into the heat-safe containers and insert the candle wicks. Once the wax has hardened, your candles are ready to use.

When lit, the candles release a scent that repels bugs and keeps them away from your outdoor gathering. They’re perfect for picnics, barbecues, and other outdoor events where bugs are a nuisance.

But how do these candles actually work? The answer lies in the citronella oil. When the candle is lit, the heat from the flame vaporizes the oil, which releases a strong scent that masks the carbon dioxide and lactic acid that humans emit when we breathe. These are the two primary attractants that mosquitoes use to locate their prey, so when they can’t smell them, they’re less likely to come near you.

In addition to their bug-repelling properties, citronella candles also have a pleasant, refreshing scent that can help create a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. So, not only will they keep the bugs away, but they’ll also add to the ambiance of your outdoor gathering.

They are all made using Citronella Essential oil.

Citronella oil is an essential oil that’s made from the distillation of the Asian grass plant in the Cymbopogon genus Lemongrass.

Citronella oil is extracted from the leafy part of the citronella plant by the steam distillation technique, it’s not a very nice scent in its raw form so it is no wonder the bugs hate it. Citronella Essential Oil slows or prevents the growth or spread of harmful airborne bacteria making it a great antiseptic too. Great for tired muscles or nerve and arthritic pain too, so if you have some oil leftover make yourself a massage oil   Citronella is also great for respiratory infections and the candle burning in the room will help with this also.

Making your own candles is really easy and you only need the basic of supplies Wax and Wicks.

With the arrival of the Japanese Encephalitis Mosquito, it has become important to make sure those pesky mosquitos are not snacking on you.  Japanese encephalitis symptoms include Headache, neck pain, and Nausea. .  Japanese encephalitis does have a vaccine and you should contact your local medical professional for information on obtaining this vaccination.

But how else can you protect yourself against mosquitos? Keep mosquitoes away from exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks, you can even wear a mosquito net hat.  Tuck shirts into pants and pants into socks to cover gaps in your clothing where mosquitoes can get to your skin.  For a natural repellent use essential oils for making your own Mosquito bug spray repellent. Add oils to water and spray into the air or add small drops to your clothing.  Use a Necklace or Bracelet oil diffuser to help repel mosquitoes naturally.  Insect bracelets and necklaces are great for children too.
