More often than not, when I set out to paint a subject, I don’t have but an idea or memory of what it looks like. The same is true for other painters as well.
That can be a plus when you want to give your personal general impression and emotional color to a mural featuring a garden, or sky ..or whatever your subject is.
But many times, you think you have a good grasp on what something looks like, only to start trying to reproduce it in paint, and be halted by the fact that things aren’t coming out like you intended…and it’s because you need to SEE the subject.
The best way to observe something for the sake of art is to have it right in front of you. This is called painting from life…or still life in the case of inanimate, objects.
